Encyclopedia Mythera

Below is a record of all knowledge we have of the continent Mythera.
There is not a lot - Icewing mythologists studying ancient scrolls have only found a hand full of accounts regarding the fabled continent and its inhabitants. All findings have been gathered here for the average dragon to read.

Index

Please read the sections carefully, the entirety of Mythera is intrinsically linked by some unknown power, so entries tend to bleed together and contain numerous notes and paragraphs with key information. This is only the main index, there are multiple subsections in each item.

Section 1A - Location

Mythera is located to the northeast of the Ice kingdom. If you follow the map of Pyrrhia and refer to the scroll "The Land where Time is Still" you will read that the Icewing explorer "Frostbane" flew from the northernost tip of the Ice kingdom, to the island a short distance East, and then continued North until reaching a series of ice flows. The trip was exhausting, as there is a stretch of sea where no land exists. Unfortunately, the continent is so far from Pyrrhia that it would not be listed on any maps. However, if you leave Pyrrhia in the middle of winter, you will arrive in Mythera by early spring and can use drifting icebergs to rest your wings. Otherwise, the distance is utterly impossible. No other records exist detailing the location of Mythera.Return to the index?

Section 2A - Weather

All record of Mythera's climate depict it as fair. The summers are warm, and winters are frigid. Plentiful rains in early to mid spring. It is often foggy, and the warmth of the location has much to do with the continent being a supervolcano as well as other sources which cannot be proven, and are only mentioned briefly in scrolls such as "The Land of Bitter Cold."Return to the index?

Section 3A - Climate

Being located in a supervolcano caldera makes Mythera a surprisingly favorable place to live. Or it would- if it could be easily found. In the center of the caldera are valleys and springs, with geysers and extremely rare volcanic activity. It is rumored that the endemic tribes royal families are linked to the continent in ways we cannot fully understand. Perhaps it's ancient Animus magic? The scrolls don't say.Return to the index?

Section 1B - The Red Flowers

A red flower grows in Mythera that seems to be uniquely edible, large blooms vary but are at their largest supposedly the size of a dragon's head. According to "An in depth study of the endemic life of Mythera" these flowers are grown and cultivated as both decorative plants and as a source of food, blooming late in the year for only a few nights.

Petals are thick and crunch when bitten, and the pistil has a slightly peppery taste that originates from the plant's ovary. Different colors have been bred for different tastes and the strength of the peppery taste. The entire plant is edible, and might have some medicinal properties.Return to the index?

Section 2B - The Fruit of Truesight

A fruit that commonly grows on trees. Another unique and commonly eaten fruit. When left to ferment, it is rumored that dragons who eat the fermented fruit or drink wine made from the fermented fruit gain some sort of truesight. They are able to see the souls of other dragons, and maybe even animus dragons as well. The outside of this fruit is waxy and smooth, and forms a shell when fermented. The fruit has a deep magenta-red color, and tasted similar to a mix of blueberry, blackberry, and pomegranate with a sweet, pungent alcoholic taste when fermented. It is worth mentioning that dragons who are under the influence of this strange plant cannot see other things well. Their vision blurs, and they might find it hard to walk.Return to the index?

Section 3B - Other Endemic Flora

Plants in Mythera usually mirror those on Pyrrhia, with few exceptions.Bog-rosemaryThese wildflowers are native to the Isles and are typically found within the center of the continent. They are quite small and sometimes easy to miss. The Bog-rosemary usually grows surrounded by mosses. These flowers typically bloom in early spring. After a few more months, they enter their full growth and become a delicate pale pink color. When these flowers have blossomed, they do become a bit easier to notice, unlike when they are still green and have not bloomed.Sundew Lilies
The Sundew Lily is a flower that is often associated with peace. Many Dragons are known to wear the lily on their mane or behind their ears as a means of remembering those who fought and died for their tribe.
These flowers stand at approximately 36 inches, and their petals can span up to 5 to 7 inches long. They are fragrant and bloom between Summer and Autumn. The Sundew Lily is a great flower to give, either as part of a bouquet or a potted plant. If a Sundew Lily is maintained, it can go on to live for many years – the key is to ensure proper maintenance of the potted plant.Gorse/Furze/WhinGorse/Furze/Whin has three names. What it's called depends on where you are in Mythera. You'd be hard pressed NOT to notice this ubiquitous yellow Irish wildflower on your travels around Mythera. The blazing blossoms set hillsides ablaze all through winter and summer.Get close for a sniff of the amazing coconut aroma. But not too close... Mind the thorns!BroomBroom is often be mistaken with Gorse/Furze/Whin (above). Both are coloured a vivid yellow and similarly shaped. But Broom is softer to the touch. In addition, Broom only flowers in summer whereas Gorse/Furze blooms all year round.Broom is often found in sandy mountainous soils, hence its name; 'mountain reed'.Dog RoseRanging from white to dark pink in colour, these beautiful wildflowers are often found growing along trails. The flowers hold a stunning rose aroma. They've featured in many a traditional song or poem.
The dog rose is very high in vitamin C. Its rosehips can be used to make tea and syrup. During times of famine, dog rose syrup was uses as a substitute for citrus fruits, like oranges and lemons, which were unavailable in Mythera.
ElderThis deciduous shrub is very common in hedgerows all over Mythera. The elder plant grows quickly in the wild, often dominating its stretch of hedgerow. The creamy-coloured elder blossom is particularly noticeable in early summer. Elderflowers are heavily scented and make delicious drinks. The flavour is unique and difficult to describe for anyone who hasn't experienced it before.Later in the year, elder trees hang heavy with clusters of dark berries. These berries are rich in vitamin C. They are harvested to make cordials, syrups, jams and even wine.FoxgloveTall. Graceful. Downy. The Foxglove is a beautiful wildflower found in many habitats. You'll see foxgloves in woodlands, moors, mountains, sea cliffs and gardens. It thrives on acid soil and quickly colonises recently cleared ground. Foxgloves are sometimes called 'Fairy Thimbles'.Tradition deemed that you should never bring Foxgloves into a house, as they were deemed to bring bad luck.
Although the Foxglove plant is poisonous, it can be harvested for medicinal use. Foxglove contains both digitoxin and digoxin, which are used to treat heart conditions.
Sea CampionSurprise, surprise: Sea Campion is mainly found near the sea. You'll notice this delicate white wildflower around shingle and near cliffs. It blooms from Summer to Fall.FuschiaYou'll notice the Fuchsia wildflower [pronounced few-sha] along roadways everywhere in Mythera. But it's a typical sight in the southwestern region. The distinctive red and purple coloured blossoms hang in hedgerows and gardens from Summer to Late Autumn. Fuchsia are deciduous shrubs that favour coastal locations and rocky ground.PrimroseThe crinkly petals of a primrose are pale yellow at the outer edges and dark yellow at the center of the flower. Its leaves can grow to be 12 centimeters in length. The word primrose means ‘first flower.’ The flower earns its name by starting to come up out of the ground at the beginning of each year.Colt’s FootIt doesn’t take long to figure out that the Colt’s Foot belongs to the Daisy family. It features a mass of slim, bright yellow petals. The name Colt’s Foot refers to the U-shaped connection between the flower’s leaf and stalk. This flower is the main ingredient in an herbal remedy for sore throats and coughs.Return to the index?

Section 1C - Beastwings

One of the native tribes to the region, Beastwings are a mystery and few have been described in scrolls. In "The King of the Cold" a Beastwing of pure white is described as the King of the Beastwings. While the author of the scrolls never got to interact with this dragon, it is mentioned that other dragons considered him a benevolent and kind king. His name "Lugh" is mentioned only once in the scroll, as the rest has been lost from damage to the scroll. No other information of the royal bloodline is known.

A sketch of Lugh based on his description in "The King of the Cold."

The only other scroll detailing the beastwings describes them as a reclusive race of dragons. They have been seen only one time since the time of Darkstalker, and since then they seem to have vanished from Pyrrhia. From the limited texts we have, they have their own language and seldom speak common draconic.

Beaswting eye

Beastwing eyes have slit pupils, and a tapetum lucidum gives the eye its 'glow' at night and their superb nightvision.

Beastwings have a range of color second only to Rainwings, and may present complex markings like stripes, spots, or individually colored scales and scale rows. Usually, the mane of a Beastwing is a darker or lighter color than the body. However there have been some exceptions to this rule.

Section 2C - Deepwings

Deepwings have only been mentioned in "The King of the Cold" and other than a passive mention, there are no recorded descriptions of Deepwings.Return to the index?

Section 3C - Threats

Mythera is home to far more than just the two tribes. There are mentions of massive animals like the warg, giant wolves that can kill fully grown dragon, wisps, and other strange creatures that do not seem to travel or exist outside Mythera. Documentation of these species however, do not exist past a mention in various scrolls.Return to the index?

Beastwings - Known Royalty

A recently discovered scroll belonging to an old archeologist who likely obtained it in some sort of dig or excavation was kept up until recently by a member of the third circle. This scroll details the Beastwing royal family up until a certain point, but wasn't dated and it is unknown if these Beastwings are still alive.
